Undrained VHM Capacity – Documentation
What this module does
This module calculates failure envelopes of the undrained capacity of circular shallow foundations under combined vertical load, horizontal load and moment as a function of foundation geometry and soil shear strength profile. Dead and live loads and moments can be defined with user-defined partial factors. This module has the capability to automatically iterate to return the optimized solution as a function of either the foundation geometry, soil strength profile or material factor.
Limits
This module operates within specified limits of dimensionless groups defining foundation embedment ratio and soil strength heterogeneity. Limits are shown in parentheses in italics next to the parameter.
Usage
Select and fill in the desired input fields. Default values are provided initially. Hover over the input parameter for a definition of the term.

Click Submit and results will be displayed in the derived input, output and plot boxes. Hover over any derived input or output parameter for a definition of the term.

Select an input variable to optimize the solution by and click the Optimize button. The minimum value of the selected variable (all other input as specified in the Input fields) will be displayed in the Output panel and the failure envelope will be replotted for the optimized solution.

How to operate plots (using Plotly)
See: Zoom, Pan, and Hover Controls in Plotly Graphs
See: Getting to Know The Plotly Modebar
The Play with this data! button opens the selected plot in the Plotly web app, allowing for additional features such as saving plot data.
Click on Additional Reading on the landing page, and then the Shallow Foundation VHM tab to read the background paper to this module, “Vulpe, Gourvenec & Power (2014), A generalised failure envelope for undrained capacity of circular shallow foundations under general loading.”
